Hiring new representatives: what they must hold, and free SIE study.

A new representative needs the SIE and a representative-level exam, and your firm registers them on Form U4. Exemplar Prep is a free SIE study resource you can point candidates to.1,2,3

There is no firm dashboard and no partnership with any firm. Candidates keep their own records. How this content is made.

What a new representative must hold

  • A current SIE pass. If four or more years have passed since the later of the day they passed it and the day their last representative registration ended, they must pass the SIE again.1,4,5
  • An appropriate representative-level exam, which your firm sponsors.1,2,5
  • A Form U4 filed by your firm through CRD, with Social Security number and fingerprints.3

Candidates can pass the SIE before you hire them. Enrollment details must match the Form U4 exactly, or the result may not import into CRD.4,5

After registration

  • Regulatory Element continuing education every year by December 31, starting the year after first registration.6
  • A missed Regulatory Element makes the registration inactive; two years inactive ends it.6
  • Your firm’s Firm Element program: an annual needs review and a written training plan.6
  • Keep the Form U4 current, generally within 30 days of a change.3

A representative unregistered for two or more years must pass the representative exam again. One who leaves after at least a year can keep the qualification for up to five years through the Rule 1240(c) continuing education program.1,6

Questions

Does a candidate who passed the SIE need to retake it after a job change?

Not while the pass is current. A registered representative who moves to a role that needs another representative registration takes only that exam. If four or more years have passed since the later of the day they passed the SIE and the day their last representative registration ended, they must pass it again.1,4,5

Can a candidate take the SIE and the Series 7 on the same day?

Yes, once associated with your firm, if seats are free. They are separate sessions.5
