How hard is the SIE

How hard is the SIE? What the official facts show.

FINRA calls the SIE an introductory-level exam. It has also said that over 70 percent of individuals pass the SIE, the Series 7 and the Series 24 on the first attempt.1,2

What makes it manageable

  • It tests basic knowledge, not a job you already do.1
  • FINRA publishes the content outline, so you know every topic in advance.1,3
  • There is no penalty for guessing.3

What makes it hard

  • It is broad: four sections covering products, markets, accounts, prohibited practices and regulation.1,3
  • Pace: 80 questions in 1 hour and 45 minutes.1,3
  • Closed book, with scores equated across question sets.3,4,5

A broad, closed-book exam rewards telling similar rules apart. That is why every wrong choice in our practice names the mistake behind it.

How to judge your own readiness

Study by section weight, then check one section at a time. A practice score shows where you are weak; it is not a pass prediction.
